Mikelson M50 Sportfisher: For Fishing Beyond the Horizon

December 14, 2018

The Mikelson M50 Sportfisher may not be as recognizable to East Coast anglers as most sportfishing yachts, but this West Coast build offers extensive range, and impressive comfort rivaling much larger boats.   With a 1,000-gallon fuel capacity and a fuel-efficient hull design, she glides through the water effortlessly providing spectacular range.   “Our primary market for Mikelson Yachts is anglers requiring long-range capabilities; about 70 percent of our customers are previous owners,” said vice president Patrick Sullivan.   The M50 is known for a solid and quiet ride, and credit is due to the hull design, as well as placement of fuel tanks and engines. The hull is constructed of a weight-saving Divinycell core with heavily built marine ply bulkheads and foam-cored fiberglass stringers. To create a low center of gravity, the three fuel tanks (all cross-connected) are situated deep in the hull with one centerline and two outboard. V-drives also allow Mikelson to mount the engines under the cockpit sole.   Captain Paul Fecteau out of California described the typical 850-mile run back north from Cabo San Lucas on the M50to Power and Motoryacht. “Usually conditions on the trip north have us running into a horrible 5-foot, head-sea chop. Many larger boats with hard chines and flatter bottoms can’t make the speed we can on this 50-footer.”   While the M50 provides the comfort of a cruising yacht, she impresses avid anglers with her fish-fighting prowess. She is nimble, quick, vibration-free when backing down, and according to Power and Motoryacht, she’s equally impressive spinning in slightly more than one boat length.   The flybridge is full-beam – all 16 feet 8 inches – with helm stations fore and aft, and the marlin tower is easily accessible through a hatch in the top. Large baitwells are lighted with windows, and the cockpit is full beam as well. Rails are stainless steel, rather than aluminum, and the transom door opens to a platform secured by a waist-high rail- ideal for fighting fish in the right conditions and on/off access for divers.   Stepping into the large cherry-drenched salon, space is apparent. TheL-shaped hi-low dinette is opposite an enormous ultra-leather settee. The under-salon utility room provides the creature comforts of land with a full-sized washer and dryer, and 2 cabins provide space for 4 single berths as well as 2 heads.   The Mikelson M50 Sportfisher provides, comfort, range, quality, and fishability.
